Working with Jewel
We have really been working with Jewel. She is getting use to having "stuff" on her neck and back. She doesn't run or buck any more...
Ernie is everyone's friend. Jewel is getting use to Ernie always being around. Looks like best friends in the making.
Jewel-with her halter around her neck, my hat on her butt and talking to Shasta coming in from out back. Look at that butt! Wow...Jewel is a looker. She is only 6 weeks old

Jewel's Color is Changing
Its hard to get a good picture of Jewel's changing coat. If you look closely you can see the lighter spots. She started with a small spot on her back now she has gray spots all over.
She has a large spot under her jaw.
As she scratches he hair falls out revealing the gray, black and white underneath.
My vet said she will change colors three times before her color will be permanent. The fun part of roans is that they change color several times a year. The difference between a gray horse and a blue roan is that the color of the gray hair is obviously gray. A roan's hair (specifically a blue roan) the hairs are all black and white displaying from a distance a gray. Up close you can see the individual black and white hairs. Very fun to watch the change.

Meet Lilly
I know, I know but I can't seem to help myself. Well it started with I wanted to have a friend for Jewel when I wean her in 5 months. So I've been watching for weanlings and yearlings. Lilly is a 10 month old registered Quarter Horse filly that has an injury to her back left fetlock growth plate, the one she is resting. Her options are to have surgery (expensive) or complete quiet rest for 6 months. She is small for her age. Her previous owner, Hollie, felt she needed to find her a new home so in step Bob and myself. We brought Lilly home last night. For now she will remain in a 12x12 stall. As she gets better we will enlarge her stall to include a run. Our hope is that she will be all better and I can put her and Jewel together for the winter. I'm very excited. She is a sweet little girl. More pictures later.... :)
